Adding sound to a website

When we speak of adding sound to a website we are generally talking about adding sound effects, music or possibly speech, although it is possible to add a complete sound track to a site. However, large sound files may take a long time to download on slow computers just as with photographs. Since a significant percentage of computers are likely not to have a sound card, the site must be designed to work without sound. Sound therefore can only be considered to be an embellishment. It is also worth bearing in mind that continuous sound effects could be very annoying to some, if not all, visitors. Interactive features can be used to enable sounds files to be played only when the visitor activates them.

That having been said, sound can be a very useful addition in many situations but, as in the use of photographs, the quality must be good. Deram has facilities for recording quality speech, music and effects on digital sound files if required.
